Federal Fair Housing Act
The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of dwellings, and in other housing-related transactions, based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status (including children under the age of 18 living with parents or legal custodians, pregnant women, and people securing custody of children under the age of 18), and disability.
State and Local Protections
Washington DC: The DC Human Rights Act provides additional protections based on personal appearance, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, marital status, family responsibilities, matriculation, political affiliation, source of income, place of residence or business, and status as a victim of an intrafamily offense.
Maryland: The Maryland Fair Housing Act extends protections to include marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, and source of income.
Virginia: The Virginia Fair Housing Law provides protections consistent with federal law, with additional protections for elderliness and source of funds.
